Frequently asked questions

Do I need an account to use Blades?

No. Blades has no accounts and no sign-up — everything works on your device, right out of the box.

Where is my flight data stored? Is it private?

On your device, protected by iOS's own encryption — with optional extra AES-256 database encryption (SQLCipher) you can turn on in Settings. We keep no central copy of your logbook and cannot see your data. There are no ads and no tracking.

Does Blades work offline?

Yes. Logging, your logbook, your fleet and exports all work without a connection. A few features need internet: weather, the global airport map, optional AI lookups, and iCloud backup.

Is there an iPad version?

Not yet. Blades is made for iPhone.

Can I use it for both crewed aircraft and drones?

Yes. Blades keeps separate Pilot and Drone logbooks, each with its own dashboard, logbook and fleet. Switch between them at the bottom of Settings. More in the drone logbook guide.

How is night time worked out?

Along your route. Blades follows the flight from departure to arrival and counts the time between the end of evening civil twilight and the start of morning civil twilight, when the sun is more than 6° below the horizon. That is how EASA defines night, and how the FAA defines night for logging. Take-offs and landings are marked day or night by the sun at each airport, and you can always change the numbers. More on logging night. More in How to log night time.

How do I bring in my existing logbook?

Open Settings → Import. You can import a CSV file, or enter your totals by hand with Block import manually. If a CSV is missing some values, use Backfill missing hours to add them per field so your totals and currency stay accurate.

How do I export my logbook?

From Settings you can export a professional PDF in several layouts (handy for job applications) and a full CSV of your data, anytime.

Which logbook layouts are there?

Pilot logbook, Professional Pilot Logbook, EASA AMC1 FCL.050, FAA 14 CFR 61.51 and the Remote Pilot Logbook for drones. You can also photograph a page of your own logbook and Blades builds a layout from its columns. More in the EASA pilot logbook guide.

How do I back up or move to a new device?

Turn on iCloud backup in Settings. A snapshot of your logbook is stored in your own iCloud account (encrypted by Apple, and also by Blades if you turn on extra encryption), so you can restore it after reinstalling or on another of your devices.

Is iCloud a backup or a sync?

A backup. Blades saves a copy of your logbook to your own iCloud and can restore it from there. It doesn't keep two devices in sync.

What's free, and what's in Premium?

You can use the app for free with up to 20 manually logged flights per logbook, plus a one-time allowance of Blade-coins for the AI features. Blades Premium unlocks unlimited logging and refills your Blade-coins every month.

What happens at 20 flights, or if I stop Premium?

Your flights stay. You can still open, edit and export all of them; only new flights need Premium. In the pilot logbook, imported flights don't count towards the 20. In the drone logbook, every flight counts.

How do I manage or cancel my subscription?

Subscriptions are billed and managed by Apple. Open the iPhone Settings app → tap your name → Subscriptions, and you can change or cancel there anytime. It renews automatically until cancelled.

How accurate are the AI features?

AI lookups are an aid and can be wrong — always review the results before saving. What you submit is sent over an encrypted connection without any identifier. Our AI provider does not use it to train models and keeps it only for a limited period under its terms. See the Privacy Policy for details.

How do I delete my data?

Settings → Manage app data lets you clear everything on the device. Deleting the app also removes its on-device database. iCloud snapshots stay in your iCloud until you delete them there.

What happens to my logbook if Blades disappears?

It's on your iPhone and in your own iCloud backup, not on our servers. Export a CSV of everything, or your pages as a PDF, whenever you like and keep a copy wherever you want.

Is Blades an official logbook?

Blades is a personal tool to help you record and export your flying. You remain responsible for the accuracy of your logbook and for any requirements set by your authority — keep an independent backup of your official records.
